HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 12

Facemyer, Fealy, Farris and Manuel)


Urging support of the activities of the West Virginia Injury Control Network (WVICN) to promote awareness of injury problems and motivate action which will reduce the toll of injury deaths and disabilities in the State.

Whereas, Unintentional injury has consistently ranked among the top five causes of death in West Virginia; and

Whereas, Unintentional injury is the leading cause of premature mortality in West Virginia; and
Whereas, A study conducted by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources found that the West Virginia mortality rate for unintentional injuries exceeds that for the United States; and
Whereas, That same study found that injury-related mortality among children below the age of fifteen years exceeds that for the United States; and
Whereas, Deaths due to motor vehicle crashes, falls, fires, burns, drownings not related to boating activities, poisonings and aspirations are the most common causes of injury mortality in West Virginia; and
Whereas, The West Virginia Injury Control Network (WVICN), comprised of representatives from local communities, the University System, entities of State Government and other organizations, has been formed "to identify the most threatening injuries and the populations at risk, promote awareness of the magnitude of the injury problem and motivate action that will reduce the toll of injury deaths and disabilities in West Virginia"; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Legislature recognizes, encourages and supports the WVICN in its stated mission; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates be hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Gaston Caperton, Governor of the State of West Virginia.
